Heat pump questions answered

The most common questions we receive before a property assessment — covering compatibility, performance and available support.

Can a heat pump work with existing radiators?
In many cases, yes — but it depends on radiator sizing relative to the heat pump's flow temperature. Heat pumps operate most efficiently at lower flow temperatures (35–45°C) than a gas boiler (60–80°C). Undersized radiators may need to be replaced or supplemented. A heat-loss calculation and radiator review forms part of every assessment before a model is recommended.
What flow temperature does a heat pump require?
Most modern heat pumps operate efficiently between 35°C and 55°C flow temperature. The lower the flow temperature required, the higher the SCOP (efficiency coefficient). Systems with underfloor heating typically achieve the lowest flow temperatures. Properties with older radiators may require a higher flow temperature, which reduces efficiency but is still achievable. This is assessed during the heat-loss survey.
How loud is an outdoor heat pump unit?
Sound output varies by model and operating mode. Typical outdoor units produce between 40dB and 55dB at one metre — broadly equivalent to a quiet conversation to a normal conversation. Units such as the Daikin Perfera and Vaillant aroTHERM plus operate at the quieter end of the range. Acoustic impact on neighbours, permitted development rules and unit placement are reviewed as part of the design process.
What is the BUS grant and who qualifies?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government grant that provides £7,500 towards the cost of an air-source heat pump installation in England and Wales. To qualify, the property must have a valid EPC, the installation must be by an MCS-certified contractor, and the existing heating system must meet certain conditions. LUMIXIS projects are eligible where the property and installation meet MCS standards. Grant availability and terms are confirmed during the initial enquiry.
